Actions to Take if a Flight is Delayed

A traveller is automatically allowed legal rights and protection from the Denied Boarding Regulations if he or she satisfies the following conditions:

  • The booking was confirmed.
  • Check-in was on time.
  • The traveller is departing from or arriving into an EU airport on an airline whose main focus of business lies within the European Union.

Furthermore, if a flight is delayed between two and four hours (concurrent with the distance that is to be travelled), an individual is entitled to two free phone calls, faxes or emails and refreshments appropriate to the length of the delay.

Actions to Take if a Flight is Cancelled

In the event of a cancellation, a provider is obliged to offer an individual the choice of a full refund or a re-routing to the same destination at no additional cost. There may be instances where one is also legally able to receive financial compensation. This will be determined by the length of the flight and the possible alternatives that are available.

Entitlements

If your flight is delayed or cancelled in the EU you may be eligible for some compensation. Indeed, depending on the length of you cancelled or delayed flight you may be able to claim between €250 and €600 for the inconvenience caused. You may also be entitled to more compensation, through free refreshments, hotel accommodation if you are going to be waiting a long time for a flight and a free transfer.

However, it is worth mentioning that there are a number of instances where you will not be eligible to claim compensation. Such instances include a delay or cancellation due to unfortunate weather conditions, airline strikes or political instability.
