Back pain is an incredibly common ailment, and one that affects most people at some point in their lives. It’s also one of the most painful and uncomfortable medical conditions, and it can get much worse over time if left untreated.

Causes of back pain

Most people experience back pain in the lower back region near the hips. This type of pain is normally caused by sitting in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time, bending down in an awkward manner, and lifting heavy objects from the floor without bracing the back.


Lower back pain can also be caused by a condition known as ‘sciatica’. Sciatica begins when the sciatic nerve which is the longest nerve in the human body, becomes irritated or distressed. Back pain can be felt in other parts of the back, too, including the upper back. Upper back pain can be caused by a number of different ailments, including neck injuries, whiplash, and other shoulder conditions like frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, and shoulder dislocations.

Pain in back can also be caused by certain diseases like ankylosing spondylitis, spinal stenosis, and bacterial infections and growths in the spinal region. A doctor would be needed to diagnose these conditions.

How to deal with back pain

Back pain caused by diseases and other long term ailments will need to be treated carefully with medicine, physiotherapy, and rest. A doctor will be able to provide assistance and advice with these sorts of issues.

Other types of back pain such as those caused by poor posture, unsafe lifting of heavy objects, and prolonged periods of time spent sitting in abnormal positions are, thankfully, much easier to treat.

For instant relief, use an ice pack. An ice pack will cool the spine and cause the muscles in the back to relax, which can quickly reduce the amount of pain being felt. It’s important not to use an ice pack for longer than 15 minutes, though, else it may do more harm than good.

Painkillers like paracetamol can help to dull the pain. However, if paracetamol is not strong enough to dull your back pain, contact your doctor to see if they can prescribe something stronger.

Finally, make sure to rest your back and avoid straining it by putting too much pressure on it. Make sure to move around and keep your back mobile, though, as sitting still or lying in bed for too long can slow down the healing process and prolong your recovery.

Most cases of back pain will cure themselves within 12−16 weeks, as long as the back is given proper care and attention. Contact a doctor if your back pain symptoms persist or show no signs of improving.

To keep your back free of pain, make sure to exercise and perform back exercises on a regular basis, keep a healthy weight, and avoid making sudden movements that can greatly stress the back. Also, work on improving your posture and practice using safe lifting techniques when lifting heavy objects.
